A BRIEF HISTORY ABOUT OUR PRIEST-IN-CHARGE.

Father Williamson Sylvanus Taylor was born in Freetown, Sierra Leone, West Africa, where he received his elementary and secondary education in Anglican Mission Schools, founded by the Church Missionary Society from England.

 

Father Taylor studied at Fourah Bay College in Freetown and received the Bachelor of Arts Degree from Durham University in England in 1969. He entered the School of Education of the University of Sierra Leone in October 1969 and graduated in June 1970 with the postgraduate Diploma in Education. He taught in High School and also served as the School’s chaplain.

In 1974 Father Taylor came to the United States to pursue graduate studies at Howard University in Washington DC. He received the Master of Education Degree in Educational Administration and Supervision in 1975 and the Master of Arts Degree in Comparative Religion and Religious Education in 1977.

 

Father Taylor returned to his native Sierra Leone and continued teaching in High School and later at Milton Margai Teachers Training College in Freetown. He went to Europe in 1979 to study Ecumenism at the Ecumenical Institute in Bossey, the University of Geneva and the World Council of Churches in Geneva, Switzerland.

As his practical training in Ecumenism, Father Taylor lived and studied in Taize, France, Metzingen and Tubigen, in West Germany, Rome in Italy, Iona and Livingston in Scotland.

 

Father Taylor was ordained Deacon in 1980, and priest in 1981.

He served in the Diocese of Sierra Leone and the Diocese of Freetown, before returning to the United States of America to pursue Doctoral Studies in 1983. He received the Master of Sacred Theology and the Doctor of Theology degrees from Boston University. He served in the Diocese of Massachusetts as supply priest in several parishes and later as clergy associate at St. Paul’s Cathedral in Boston.

 

From 1987 to 1993 Father Taylor served as Associate Director of Ministerial Studies at Harvard Divinity School with responsibility for co-directing the school’s Field Education Program for graduate students reading for the Master of Divinity degree.

He taught courses in Supervision for Ministry and Pastoral Care and Counseling and supervised students on Field Education.

 

In March 1994, Father Taylor accepted the call to serve as Rector of the Episcopal Churches of St. Anne and St. Andrew in the Diocese of Southeast Florida. After eight years and seven months in Florida, serving as Rector, Dean of Broward Deanery and teaching Religion at Florida International University, he resigned to take up his current position as Canon for Congregational Development in the Episcopal Diocese of New York and Priest-in-Charge of the Episcopal /Anglican Church of St. Joseph in Co-op City, Bronx, New York.

 

Father Taylor is married to Monica Beatrice. They are blessed with two children and five grand children.
